We are a group of dedicated educators helping teachers and administrators delve into the complexity of what we call the "Perfect Storm – Standards, Content, Instruction, Assessment and Accountability" all the while infusing technology throughout all aspects of teaching and learning. We provide support and resources for Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies and Technology.



Provide simple, efficient and effective ways to improve instruction and enhance the learning experience for all students. Through our products, resources, and services, Above and Beyond the Core will make a measurable difference in learning outcomes for students, educators and educational systems.

Teresa Chance

Above and Beyond the Core Director

APSRC Teaching and Learning Specialist


For the past seven years Teresa has been a teaching and learning specialist at APSRC and Director of the ABC Initiative providing professional development workshops and technical assistance in the areas of K-12 curriculum development, instructional strategies, student assessment, strategic planning and leadership development. Before joining APSRC, Teresa spent 33 years serving schools in Louisiana, New Mexico, and Arkansas.

Teresa taught at every grade level, kindergarten through 8th grade, including gifted education and SPED. She has been a building principal at the elementary and middle school level, district administrator responsible for K-12 curriculum, district professional development director, and Assistant Director of NW Arkansas Educational Service Cooperative. She has also been an adjunct professor at Arkansas Tech and Arkansas State University.

Ms. Chance has led numerous workshops in standards-based curriculum design and assessment, technology integration, and best practices for instruction. Teresa has served on the board of numerous state organizations including, AASCD, AACIA, AAMLE, and AAMLA. She has been a frequent speaker at state conferences such as TICAL, AASCD, and AAEA. Teresa was the 2006 recipient of the AACIA Curriculum Administrator of the Year for Arkansas. She currently sits on the board of directors for Great Minds, a Washington D.C. based non-profit devoted to the development of quality curriculum for all students.

Susan Owens

Above and Beyond the Core Coach


Susan is an Above and Beyond the Core curriculum, instructional, and leadership coach. Susan has a passion for individualizing rich instruction for our 21st century learners and a heart for the educators making it so.


Susan has 20+ years of experience working with the children of rural Arkansas. From Head Start through graduation, from the building to the district level, her career has focused on bringing best practices and innovation to the all-important classroom teacher. At the district level, Susan has coordinated curriculum, Section 504, Federal Programs, as well as creating and leading professional development. She fully understands the multiple areas of focus common to most administrators.


Susan holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning from the Center for Leadership and Learning at Arkansas Tech University, and is on track to complete an Educational Specialist degree from Arkansas State University in December of 2017. She has been trained in Cognitively Guided Instruction, Math Design Collaborative, and Literacy Design Collaborative (SREB) as well as being a credentialed Teacher Excellence Support System evaluator and teacher trainer.
